So, what exactly is apple cider vinegar made of? One would suggest apples, wouldn’t they? That sounds just about right, but let’s dig a bit deeper.
WHAT IS APPLE CIDER VINEGAR MADE OF?
Apple cider vinegar is made by combining apples with yeast.
The yeast converts the sugar within the apples into alcohol. Then, bacteria are added which ferment the alcohol into acetic acid.
Acetic acid makes up about 5–6% of apple cider vinegar. It has been classified as a so-called “weak acid” but still has rather strong acidic properties when it is concentrated.
In addition to the acetic acid, vinegar contains water and traces of other acids, minerals and vitamins.
When apple cider vinegar is not filtered it contains a substance called “mother”. The “mother” has small amounts of enzymes, friendly bacteria and proteins, however, this will give the vinegar a not so appetizing appearance.
HOW SHOULD APPLE CIDER VINEGAR BE TAKEN?
The easiest and quickest way to get the good stuff into your body is by adding about two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to a glass of water.
However, not everyone can stomach the taste and acid of the vinegar this way so just add it to a glass of fresh fruit juice or use it to dress up a salad or make a marinade.
And how much should you take? Well, this is different for everybody. Some people take one glass with two teaspoons a day while others have it 3 times daily with 2 tablespoons. However, when in doubt you may want to consult a doctor to be on the safe side.
The common dosage is two tablespoons a day – but as mentioned above, this is individual for everyone. The most important part here is to not overdose it.

A FEW SMALL WARNINGS AND WHEN YOU MIGHT WANT TO AVOID DRINKING APPLE CIDER VINEGAR (ALWAYS CONSULT A PHYSICIAN WHEN IN DOUBT)
When being drunk right before bedtime it can severely harm your esophagus, so make sure to keep at least a 30-minute-gap between drinking apple cider vinegar and going to sleep.
Do not brush your teeth right after drinking apple cider vinegar as that can wear away the tooth enamel and cause tooth decay and cavities – wait a good 30 minutes before brushing.
Do not inhale apple cider vinegar as it can cause severe damage to your lungs.
Do not use it undiluted, neither for drinking nor on the skin.
Don’t drink too much of it.
Drinking apple cider vinegar after a meal may delay digestion, however, do not drink it on an empty stomach either as it can cause nausea.
If you feel sick after using apple cider vinegar or throw up, stop using it immediately and consult a physician.
Apple cider vinegar can interact with certain medications like insulin, antibiotics, penicillin, laxatives or diuretics so make sure to contact a physician before using it.
When you have a kidney disease, either do not use apple cider vinegar at all or only very small amounts as your kidneys might not be able to handle (high levels of) acid – again, consult a physician when in doubt.
